(Jack Vettriano)
(Banksy)
The Singing Butler is an oil-on-canvas painted in 1992 by Jack Vettriano and also one of my all time favourites. There is just something totally indulgent and extremely romantic about it.
However after seeing Banksy's version I'm no longer sure which one I love more. Despite Vettriano's version which he calls an 'uplifiting fantasy' having been on my dream acquisition list for many years, Banksy has used his usual style to make a very important point about the terrible reality of the toxic pollutants we dump into our oceans.
Banksy constantly forces us from our comfort zones and reminds us that Art is so much more than expensive pieces hanging in fancy galleries... when the intention is to educate, art has the potential to be on of the most powerful forms of protest.
